SUPERSCRIPT.-A Psalm of thanksgiving {or, for the thank-offering). \ PRIMARY AssocIATION.-Writer anqnymous and occasion un known. This is the end of the series of anthems beginning with xcv. From ancient· times this psalm has been used in the daily service of the synagogue except on certain festivals. In the metrical version of the Psalms it is set to the well-known tune, "The Old Hundredth." Subscript, cf. Lev. vii. PROPHETIC ANTICIPATION.-See notes to preceding psalms. Israel here calls upon the gentiles to share her holy joy in the presence of the enthroned Redeemer. All are welcomed to His sanctuary to join the concluding chorus of praise. PERSONAL APPLICATION.-It might be well if Christians knew more of the abandonment to holy joy expressed in these psalms.
Such worship must be spontaneous and not imitated, c£ Eph. v. 19. Perfection and rest are both found in God. All service should be joyous (2). It is by His dealings with Istael as a nation that God's exaltation will be made known in the earth (3). God is good (5) and He is great, xcv. 3. Note the fourfold call to praise (4). Thanks giving to God here means simply confessing (so the word in Heb., c£ Heb. xiii. 15) what God is and how worthy of all praise are His excellencies (4). The knowledge referred to (3a) will characterise the millennium. None must appear before God empty (4), c£ Deut. xxvi. with Heb. xiii. 15-16. VERSE NOTES 1. "Shout unto Jehovah, all the earth." What may have primarily referred to "the land,° ii prophetically to be understood of the earth. The shout of acclamation upon His accession as King is heard. 2. "serve," i.e. the homage of worship now replaces the homage of mere submission (Ps. ii. II), so that men draw near with gladness instead of with fear. 3. Israel is created and cared for. '' Know that Jehovah is God, He it is that made us, and we are His, His people and the ... " God made Israel a people, xcv. 6. 5. This is Israel's old motto sung at the dedication of the temple and at its rebuilding in Ezra's day. It will :J-gain resound in the sanctuary courts; (b) lit. "unto generation after generation."
