Suitable to the circwnstances following the discomfiture of the Assyrians in Hezekiah's days. Verse 3 doubtless refers to deliverance fr01n their mvas1on. PROPHETIC ANTICIPATION.-Plainly points to the days when Israel shall be in full enjoyment of deliverance from her future great adversaries. Millennial blessing. PERSONAL APPUCATION.-They that trust Jehovah shall not totter on their foundation. Remember that steadiness is not stubbornness (r). They who keep company with workers of iniquity will be led away to share the same fate. Loyalty and lawlessness both meet a suited rec01npense. They who trust Jehovah (I) are called righteous -Godward aspect (3); good-manward aspect (4); and upright in heart-selfward aspect (4). Have you noted the beautiful Pauline benediction (Gal. vi. 16)? Peace spells harmony, security, liberty and felicity. It is the end of all hostility, tyranny, instability and anxiety (sc). VERSE NOTES r. For Hezekiah's trust cf. 2 Kings xviii. 5; Isa. xxxvii. 10. Br. " ... which shall not be shaken, but is set fast for ever." 3. I.e. yo alien world power shall remain permanently upon the soil of Israel's inheritance, the land of Palestine, lest the nation in deep discouragement turn away permanently from God, or by mingling with the heathen learn their evil ways. " wickedness," LXX reads "the lawless one." Wickedness in Scripture is nearly always associated with spiritual evil rather than social evil. "righteous" = righteous ones. "For" at beginning of the verse shows that the confidence expressed in 2 is justified; "sceptre" = symbol of rule. 4-5. The true-hearted and the treacherous are here contrasted.
