To bring to remembrance. PRIMARY AssocIATION.-This is a repetition of Ps. xl. 13-17 with slight intentional, not accidental, variations. Superscript, "To bring to remembrance" may have reference to this repetition, or it may be a note connected with its liturgical use, either at the offering of incense (see corresponding notes to Ps. xxxviii.; c£ Luke i. 9-10), or at the offering of the "azkara," the name given to that portion of the meal offering which is mixed with oil and burnt with incense on the brazen altar, Lev. ii. 2; the term is also used of the incense placed on the shewbread and aftC'rwards burnt, Lev. xxiv. 7. PROPHETIC ANTICIPATION.-This portion of the "Burnt Offering
Psalm" (xl.) is here added as an appendix to the "Trespass Offering Psaln1" (lxix. )-a fact of n1uch significance; cf. notes to Ps. xl. We hear the voke of Messiah, the Holy Sufferer, continuing in prayer, The verbs in 2-4 may all be rendered as futures, in which case, sections II and III are predictive. Anywise we see the contrasted results as affecting the rejectors of Christ- and the redeepied of Christ respectively. PERSONAL APPLICATION .-See corresponding notes to Ps. xl. God never hurries, but He does sometimes hasten, especially to the help of the needy; c£ Luke xv. 20. For the Christian's place to find help in a time of need, see Heb. iv. r6. All the enemies of Christ shall certainly be put to shame, and they who delight to do harm to God's people shall surely suffer dishonour. VERSE NOTES I. "Be pleased," or "Hasten ... " to be supplied at the beginning. Omission of the first word is not due to "clumsiness or to a tom fragment of MSS.," as critics allege, but is to fix the attention upon the pr.eceding psalm, particularly 13 ff., and to refer the mind back to its connection with Ps. xi. 2. "soul" = life; "turned backward" = driven backward. 3. Br. "Let them tum back on accowit of their shame ... " 5. "But as for me, who am afflicted and needy ... " c£ lxi.x. 29, 33.
